RADIO SOAP OPERA Project 2012

Throughout Ramadan of 2012, MEND broadcast Hadutat al Balad, a radio soap opera based in East Jerusaelm. In 26 episodes, the soap opera tells the lives and stories of fictional residents of East Jerusalem, focusing on awareness raising and empowerment, especially among the youth.

The show was broadcast in East Jerusalem and access the West Bank (Ramallah, Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus, Jericho, Tulkarem, and Jenin) three times a day, so as to reach as many listeners as possible.

The project was made possible by funding from the Fetzer Institute, a non-profit that aims to foster awareness of the power of love and forgiveness.

Hadutat al Balad raises interesting questions about the lack of social unity in East Jerusalem and the ways that society can work to heal the cracks that have formed since Occupation. The response to the show was incredibly positive and encouraging, and the episodes have provided MEND with rich pedagogical material to teach about nonviolence and democracy in future projects.
