SMARTER WITHOUT VIOLENCE 2016 and YOUTH AMBASSADORS FOR HUMANITY 2014-5
Two projects, Smarter Without Violence 2016 and Youth Ambassadors for Humanity 2014-5, have focussed specifically on disaffected East Jerusalem youth, from deprived areas (such as the Old City, Silwan, Issawiyya, Sur Baher) and provided them with skills via training in active nonviolence, gender, media and communications, and conflict management. The youth bonded through summer activity camps and also met with nonviolent activists in the West Bank. The participants (boys and girls mixed) undertook projects in their neighbourhoods that they designed and implemented to reduce local violence, such as an activity play day for children (in the Old City) painting the walls along the main street in Issawiyya near the community centre (which they had refurbished in a previous project with MEND). They designed posters and bumper stickers and a calendar and created spots to promote nonviolence on radio and video and also created facebook sites to stay in touch with each other.
